Woman rejects DNA results in paternity case against Sonko

COURT Mother of two has been demanding Sh140,000 for children each month

A Kwale woman who claims that Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko is the father of her two children yesterday rejected DNA results presented in court indicating that the flamboyant politician was not the biological father of one of the boys. Ms Josephine Thuku, through lawyer Leonard Shimaka, said she doubted the credibility of the DNA tests conducted by Mr George Oguda, an analyst at the Government Chemist in Mombasa. According to court papers, Ms Thuku was Sonko’s girlfriend when she was in college. The senator was then living in Kwale. She says she had the first child while in college in 1999. They then separated for a long time. The second son was born in May 2008 when they got together again after reconciling, she said. She has been demanding Sh140,000 per month for the upkeep of the two children. Ms Thuku said the senator had shown no interest in the second child. Mr Shimaka told Kwale resident magistrate Christine Njagi that Ms Thuku was not involved in the process of getting the DNA done. According to him, the senator picked the children from school without her knowledge and took them for the test “in a private house with a doctor who only examined one of the two children”. The lawyer asked the court to direct a repeat test to be conducted at Path Care in Mombasa. According to him, the institution was credible and it would send the results directly to the court. Legitimate But Mr Sonko’s lawyer, Ms Lydia Kwamboka, insisted that the results were legitimate. “The DNA test was conducted in a hospital. Therefore, it is not true that they (children) were taken to a hotel,” she said. Ms Thuku filed the case against Mr Sonko arguing that he had refused to support one of the children claiming that he was not the father. Her lawyer asked that the senator continue providing monthly shopping worth Sh15,000 and paying fees for the two children until the matter was settled. Ms Kwamboka did not oppose the request. The magistrate set the hearing for December 17.
